Zephyranthes is a true bulb. There are 71 species which originate from the southern parts of North America, and from central and South America. The plants have a lovely aroma at night time. They look great in the foreground of mixed borders or a rockery. They reach a height of 20cm at maturity.
Seasons and planting
Zephyranthes prefers a well-balanced soil that has good drainage and some moisture retention. The soil should be loosened to a depth of 20cm and you should work in some compost. A mulch can help retain moisture during summer. The bulbs should be planted with their neck at ground level and with 8cm between them.
They should be watered regularly during their growth season and watering should stop during their dormancy – they can tolerate water if soil is well-draining. The lowest temperature that the plant can tolerate is -1°C.
Can occur from offsets or a seed sown in spring.
